I still remember the first time I realized you could use Greek yogurt to help you make healthy Greek yogurt muffins. Thanks to the yogurt, these muffins have no butter and no oil and get a decent protein boost as well. These Greek yogurt muffins with peanut butter and honey have become my go-to for busy mornings when I need something that tastes like dessert but actually keeps me full until lunch.

What Makes This Actually Good

  • This moist muffin recipe with yogurt stays tender for days because Greek yogurt replaces most of the fat. You will see the same trick in my Greek Yogurt Scones.
  • Peanut butter adds natural sweetness and pushes the protein to 7 grams per muffin.
  • Whole wheat flour brings fiber without making these taste like cardboard.
  • Sugar-free chocolate chips satisfy cravings without the sugar spike.

Ingredients

  • Large Eggs. Two eggs bind everything together and add extra protein to the mix.
  • Plain Whole Milk Greek Yogurt. It’s the key ingredient. It keeps the muffins moist while adding about 14 grams of protein per cup. Another quick breakfast recipe that uses greek yogurt is my High Protein Greek Yogurt Bowl.
  • Natural Creamy Peanut Butter. Look for peanut butter with just peanuts and maybe salt. The creamy kind blends easier than chunky.
  • Honey. Just enough to balance the tang from the yogurt without making these overly sweet.
  • Whole Wheat Flour. Adds fiber and a nutty flavor that pairs well with peanut butter.
  • Baking Powder. Gives these muffins the lift they need without making them dense.
  • Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips. ChocZero or similar brands work great. They melt nicely without adding extra sugar.

How to Round Out the Meal

  • Pair with a cup of coffee or tea for a complete breakfast on the go. My Iced Mocha Protein Latte is a favorite pairing when I want to push the protein higher.
  • Serve with a side of fresh berries for extra fiber and antioxidants.
  • Enjoy with a glass of milk or a protein shake to push the protein even higher.
  • Great alongside scrambled eggs when you need a heartier morning meal.

How to Switch It Up

  • Almond Butter Swap. Trade the peanut butter for almond butter if you prefer that flavor or have a peanut allergy. If you want another peanut butter focused dish, my Baked Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal is a solid option.
  • Different Mix-Ins. Try adding blueberries, chopped apples, or walnuts instead of chocolate chips.
  • Vanilla Version. Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract for a warmer, sweeter flavor profile.
  • Higher Protein. Fold in a scoop of vanilla protein powder and reduce the flour by 2 tablespoons.

Things Worth Knowing

  • Microwave the Peanut Butter

If your peanut butter is stiff, warm it for 15 seconds before mixing. It blends into the wet ingredients much easier.

  • Don’t Overmix the Batter

Mix until just combined. Overmixing makes the muffins tough and dense instead of light and tender.

  • Storage for Meal Prep

Keep these in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. They also freeze well for up to 3 months.

  • Test for Doneness

Insert a toothpick into the center of a muffin. It should come out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.

FAQs

  • Can I use regular chocolate chips instead of sugar-free?

Yes, regular chocolate chips work fine. Just know they will add more sugar per muffin, around 4 to 5 grams extra.

  • Can I make these without Greek yogurt?

Regular plain yogurt will work, but the protein will be lower and the texture might be slightly less thick. Cottage cheese is also a strong option to replace the greek yogurt in this recipe. Just be sure to blend it first.

  • How do I store these muffins?

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days, in the fridge for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.

  • Can I use all-purpose flour instead of whole wheat?

Yes, all-purpose flour works well. The texture will be slightly lighter, and the fiber content will be lower.

  • Are these muffins gluten-free?

They aren’t, since they contain whole wheat flour. To make them gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
