Looking for a high-protein breakfast or post-workout drink that comes together in minutes? This blueberry protein shake recipe delivers 39 grams of protein with real fruit, vanilla protein powder, and no added sugar. Just blend and go. My Mixed Berry Protein Shake is another no added sugar one I make when I need a filling high protein smoothie.

Why This Recipe Works
- 39 grams of protein per serving keeps you full and supports muscle recovery after training.
- Frozen blueberries create a thick, creamy texture without needing ice or banana.
- Flaxseed adds fiber and omega-3s while keeping the ingredient list short and simple.
- There is no added sugar, so the sweetness comes from the fruit and vanilla protein powder alone.

Ingredients
- Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk. This is my favorite way to keep the calorie count low in smoothies. The vanilla flavor pairs naturally with the blueberries and protein powder.
- Vanilla Protein Powder. One scoop here gets you close to 25 grams of protein before anything else is added. Choose a brand with no added sugar for the best macros.
- Blueberries. Fresh or frozen works here. Frozen gives you a thicker smoothie that feels more like a treat.
- Flaxseed. Adds fiber and healthy fats. Hemp seed works as a swap if you prefer.
- Vanilla Extract. Ties all the sweet flavors together and also further boosts the vanilla flavor a bit. A little goes a long way, so start with half and taste as you go.
What Makes This Worth Making
- High protein content at 39 grams and 420 calories helps you stay full through morning meetings or afternoon slumps.
- Ready in under 5 minutes from start to finish with no cooking required.
- Tastes like a lightly sweetened and healthy blueberry muffin that you can drink.
- It has no added sugar, so you won’t have to worry about any sugar crashes.
- Gluten-free out of the box, and dairy-free and vegan if you use a plant-based protein powder.
- Uses simple ingredients you can find at any grocery store.
- Everything blends up in one cup, so cleanup only takes a minute or two.

How to Round Out the Meal
- Whole grain toast with almond butter or avocado for extra carbs and staying power. In fact, my avocado toast recipe is a great breakfast option to pair this smoothie with.
- A small bowl of Greek yogurt with Protein Granola on the side for added texture.
- Hard-boiled or scrambled eggs if you want even more protein to go with your smoothie.

Ways to Make This Yours
- Swap the fruit. Try frozen strawberries, raspberries, or a banana for a different flavor profile. If you can’t find blueberries, my Apple Vanilla Protein Smoothie uses the same vanilla base.
- Change the protein. Use chocolate or unflavored protein powder instead of vanilla for variety.
- Add greens. Toss in a handful of spinach and you will not taste it at all.
- Make it creamier. Add a quarter cup of Greek yogurt or cottage cheese for extra thickness and protein. If you want a creamy dessert that still has that blueberry flavor, my Cottage Cheese Blueberry Ice Cream is worth checking out.

Things Worth Knowing
-
Use Frozen Fruit
Frozen blueberries make the smoothie thick and cold without diluting it with ice. My Blueberry Cheesecake Protein Smoothie is a similar blueberry smoothie that also uses frozen blueberries but with a more cheesecake flavor.
-
Blend in Order
Add liquids first, then powders, then frozen fruit. This helps everything blend smoothly without clumps. I’ve tested adding the ingredients in different orders and for the most part, it still works out fine if you have a powerful blender, so while I recommend the order I mentioned, it’s optional.
-
Prep Ahead
Portion out the blueberries in freezer bags for grab-and-go smoothie prep during the week. I’ll usually do this with bananas as well for my other smoothies.
-
Adjust Consistency
Add more almond milk if the smoothie is too thick, or more frozen fruit if it’s too thin. A sneaky way to thicken a smoothie without adding additional fruit is to use a small amount (around 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon) of xanthan gum which is a thickener. Start with a small amount and add more only if necessary as the consistency can get a bit too gummy if you add too much.

FAQs
-
Can I make this without protein powder?
You can skip the protein powder and add a scoop of Greek yogurt or cottage cheese instead, but the protein count will be lower. You can also swap out some of the milk for even more greek yogurt or cottage cheese if getting more protein is a priority for you.
-
How long does this smoothie last in the fridge?
From my own experience, it’s definitely best to consume them right away, but you can store it in an airtight container for up to 24 hours. Give it a good shake (no pun intended) before drinking.
-
Can I use fresh blueberries instead of frozen?
Yes, but the smoothie will be thinner and less cold. Add a handful of ice to compensate for the cold temperature and add a small amount of xanthan gum as I mentioned earlier.
-
Is this recipe vegan?
Only if you use a plant-based protein powder. With how the recipe is listed right now with whey protein powder, the recipe is not vegan.
-
What protein powder works best here?
A vanilla whey or plant-based protein powder with no added sugar works well.
